Charter 2010: A Murder Mystery

President Trish’s last official function was a murder at the Mount Pleasant Hotel (Joe says he’s been planning it for years!) A small group of actors led by a mad French detective provided mayhem and murder whilst diners tried to piece together the clues to come up with not only the name of the murderer but the motive too. Dinner courses were interrupted by gunshots and Rotarians and their guests were pressed into service to carry corpses out of the dining room. A thoroughly hilarious evening.

June Jig

A small but select crowd met at the Village Hall in West Butterwick and jigged the night away to ceilidh specialists Pierrot. It was a warm evening, but with room for everyone to strut their stuff and fling their thing, the floor was never empty. Sustenance was provided in the form of a pie and pea supper and the BYO theme made it easy for raging thirsts to be quenched (always a challenge for the two Simons, DP, Annie an George.) and whilst Hilary, Sally and Bronwen discussed the relative merits of the merlot, President Trish and Marion were apparently more interested in someone’s nifty footwork!!

Rotary Endeavour Awards

6 young students coming to the end of their compulsory time at school received Rotary awards this week. The annual award recognises young people’s achievements other than academic success and is presented to those who have overcome hurdles in order to fulfil their potential and become responsible members of the school and wider community.

Wesley Ellis, Elise Hodgkinson and Roxanne McCann from North Axholme School and Chris Wright, Jessica French and Alex Collinson from South Axholme Community School each received a gift voucher and a testimonial from the Rotary Club which can be used as part of their record of achievement  when applying for further education, training and jobs.

President Trish offered to supply refreshments at the Rectory for all the cyclists doing a sponsored bike ride.  Unfortunately she wasn't in the photo! Rotary also made cakes and assisted with sale and tea making at a music evening held in February for same.

Litter Pick - Haxey to Low Burnham Sunday 28 March 2010

A casual comment made by Rtn Iain Hogg during a weekly meeting led to a much cleaner drive home for Isle residents this week after members of the Club spent Sunday morning picking litter on the A161. North Lincs Council kindly loaned Hi Viz jackets and litter picking equipment as well as disposing of all of the litter collected on the day, enabling the club to clear the verges between Epworth and Haxey. A good deal of very interesting and unusual material was discovered dumped by the roadside and Simon W, James and Simon C are now looking at the possibility of building their own car from parts found!

Sport Relief 2010 - 21st March - North Axholme School - Crowle

3 ballet dancers and a pantomime horse and jockey were just a few of the participants in the Isle Mile, the local Sport Relief mile organised by the Rotary Club and held at North Axholme School in Crowle. The event was started by Isle MP Ian Cawsey as one of his final duties before the general election.

Presentation to Kidscap

Kidscap co-ordinator Phil Bradley receiving a cheque for £2500 , which was raised at the Valentines Ball, held at the Keepmoat Hotel on February 14th. Kisdcap is a favourite charity of the Club, holding sessions on alternate Saturday mornings for children with a range of disabilities and giving parents and siblings a little time for themselves. Activities funded by this donation include play, music and dance therapy. For more information contact Epworth Leisure centre or look out for the posters around the town.

Film Show and Afternoon Tea

The wind was blowing bitterly as over seventy older residents of the Isle arrived at the Thurlow in Epworth on the afternoon of Sunday February 28th.  John was likened to an over-excited air-traffic controller as he organised cars, taxis and social-services buses bringing visitors from villages across the Isle. Once inside, the guests watched a film (expertly projected by Ian) and were then treated to a magnificent tea. Local scouts had been drafted in to help serve and did the job superbly. Debbie had organised enough food to sink at least two battleships, but the older folk rose to the challenge, demolishing sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes, cream scones and the like (whoever said they have small appetites?) along with copious quantities of tea, whilst chatting with friends old and new. Debbie was not to be outdone, however, and as our visitors left, each took a “party bag” of more sandwiches and cakes to enjoy at home and one gent remarked that it was a shame we had forgotten the balloons. (Well, maybe next time!) It was a fabulous afternoon, enjoyed by Scouts, Rotarians and visitors alike and thanks go to John and Debbie in particular for organising the event and to Rotarians, scouts, care workers and the social services bus driver without whose help the afternoon would not have been possible.

13th February - Masked Valentines Ball - Keepmoat Stadium Doncaster

Over 250 Rotarians, family and friends met at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster for the major fundraising event of President Trish’s year. Masks great and small were the order of the day with a prize for the best mask being won by a guest from RC Hull Paragon. The venue was beautifully decorated in red, in keeping with the Valentines theme and it was clear that the events committee had put their hearts (sorry!) into planning the evening. Unmasking was an absolute necessity in order to enjoy the meal and a range of table activities including a luxury raffle, table decoration give-away and valentines quiz kept us entertained between the hearty (!) courses. A fabulous selection of music  provided by up and coming local Epworth band “Rupert Henry and the Revolvers” really got everyone onto the dance floor later on, with a mixture of hits from the 50s and 60s mixed with classic smoochy numbers for the old romantics. Soon it was time for everyone to dig deep as skilled auctioneer IPP Richard Vergette persuaded guests to part with their cash in exchange for a range of fabulous prizes and the tension became palpable at one point as his wife’s bidding hand was raised again and again and Richard desperately searched for someone to outbid her. Never one to let down a friend and fellow Rotarian-in-need, Iain Hogg stepped in and saved the day (and the Vergette bank balance!) (Bronwen has not yet forgiven him!)

More dancing followed until the last masked revellers left after 1am and the counting started. A magnificent £4766 was raised which will be divided between President Trish’s chosen charities Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Kidscap, the Epworth-based play therapy group for children with special needs.

Our heartfelt thanks and admiration are due to the Events team who organised the whole evening in meticulous detail, and in particular congratulations go to Gail for leading the team, but whose escort for the evening David Beckham had to depart early, leaving Gail in the capable hands of Tony!

Written By Bill Lennox - President - Rotary Club of Hull Paragon

On Saturday 13th February three of us and two guests made our way to the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster for the Masked Valentines Ball arranged by the Rotary Club of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme.

It was good to be able to catch up with our overseas friends again (once we'd worked out who was who behind the wonderful and inventive range of masks).

Presently came the time to de-mask as they were starting to get in the way of tucking into the fare that had been laid on. Then it was time to listen and marvel as four very accomplished teenagers played a medley of rock & roll hits from the fifties.

Finally the 250 who had turned out to support the event were in a sufficiently receptive mood and the serious business began. A wonderful selection of auction prizes provided by the members and businesses of Epworth appeared and were snapped up for equally wonderful prices (£100 of beauty products went for £130)

An estimated £4600 was raised for the two causes of Bluebell Wood children's hospice Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice and Kidscap. And the icing on the cake for us - our very own Nicole won the prize for Best Mask.

This was another totally enjoyable event continuing the tradition of 2009's Bollywood Ball and showing what can be achieved by people who are totally organised.

The Isle digs deep to send Help to Haiti

The plight of Haitians in the aftermath of the earthquake on January 12th 2010 touched everyone, but residents of the Isle dug deep when the Rotary Club of Epworth held an impromptu Coffee Morning at the Imperial Hall in Epworth on. Locals came and drank tea and coffee, donated cakes, bought buns and books and played silly games. Rotarians Sue and John Lambert press ganged their friends into supporting the cause, John wandered the streets and shops encouraging shoppers and traders to support the event and there were some exceedingly generous donations to the cause. After a very convivial three hours enough had been raised for the Club to purchase a Shelter Box.

Tree Planting at Local Primary Schools

Members of the Community and Youth Committees visited local primary schools during the Autumn Term to plant tree seeds. The teams will re-visit the schools later in the year to plant the seeds and watch mighty oaks from little acorns grow (and any other trees!!)

Pampering in Wroot

The Rotary Club of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme held its now annual Pamper Night at the home of President Trish Kingham on October 16th.  Rotarians and friends had the opportunity to sample some mini treatments including reflexology, body massage, manicures, warm wax treatments, pedicures and facials. Local beauty therapists and health experts attended as did make up and jewellery and accessory outlets. £500 was raised for Kidscap, a favourite local Rotary charity; the money will fund a dance therapist specialising in working with children with autism and other varied and complex physical, emotional and behavioural needs.

Handover

Handover was a jolly affair this year with an ever so slightly relieved now Past President Richard handing over the reins of the Club to President Trish Kingham with no noticeable dents, nicks or scratches!!! Persentations were made to a number of club members, particularly to outgoing Secretary Vanessa Hogg in acknowledgment of the sterling work she has done over the past 5 years. Trish was really looking forward to wearing another new necklace (and Joe was glad he didn’t have to pay for this one) and President-elect Andrew Gatecliff got straight in to his role by chivvying everyone about ideas for next year’s charter. A celebration meal was held at the Reindeer in Sandtoft with cabaret courtesy of that well-known ballroom dancing duo Julie and Jim.
