Mama Mia Film & Tea        Click here to watch the video

Senior residents of the Isle once more flocked, or were driven,  to the Thurlow to take part in what is set to become an annual Rotary event: the afternoon film and tea. Mama Mia was the film on offer this year and with the mountains of sandwiches scones and cakes for tea, the afternoon was bound to be a success. Many thanks go yet again to the Scouts whose help was invaluable.

Rotarians go to the Dogs

16th October

A number of Rotarians enjoyed an evening of laughter and excitement at a social event at Stainforth dog racing stadium and someone who shall remain nameless (Tony) had some not inconsiderable success thanks to his misspent days as a student  (of form, rather than anything else, it would appear!)

Hand Over of Cheque raised at Valentines Ball last year for 'Bluebell Wood'

Danny Feelan from Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice visited the Club on 30th September and after bringing us up to date about the work of the Hospice,  was presented with a cheque for £2467.35 which was raised at the Valentine’s Ball held at the Keepmoat Stadium in February

               Focus on a Crocus - 2nd October 2010

A whole day at the beginning of October was devoted to raising funds to finally conquer polio and a new world record was set after Isle residents did their bit to help eradicate polio. The day was linked to Rotary’s Focus on the Crocus initiative which is seeking to wipe out polio from the four remaining countries yet to conquer the disease - Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India - and began in Epworth with a coffee morning and finished in Amcotts with 333 residents, Rotarians and pupils from Althorpe and Keadby Primary school planting crocus bulbs throughout the village for an hour, smashing the previous record of 322.

Past President Tricia Murphy organised the Focus on a Crocus event with military precision, organising troops of local planters supported by Rotary Clubs of Epworth, Goole and Brigg and selling five bulbs for a pound, because this is the cost of immunising a child against polio.  Next February 23rd is World Rotary Day = when the crocuses should be in bloom - and hopefully polio will have  been eradicated.

             Teddy Bears Picnic

Epworth is known as a young Rotary Club and the recruitment drive continued on Sunday September 5th with a teddy bears’ picnic in the grounds of the Wesley Memorial Church in Epworth.  The sun shone on families as they unpacked their sandwiches and joined in the teddy bear activities, including a treasure hunt and name the bear. Over £150 was raised from these activities, competitions and cake sale, all of which will go towards Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

Presentation of Cheque to Alzheimers Society

Simon Wallace from the Alzheimer’s Society visited the Club on 23rd September and after speaking about the work of the Society was presented with a cheque for £ 3794.50. The money was raised largely by generous donations supporting one of our big fundraising events, the Club’s annual Coast2Coast cycle ride.

Concert in the Park July 2010

Mid July and good weather are the two usual requirements for Belton’s annual party in the park… and we nearly always get the mid July part right!! This year though, the weather was only slightly breezy as Rotarians gathered around the gazebo to share food and wine and listen to a variety of musical treats. Whilst Hilary tapped her flip flopped feet in time to the music, Marion was pulling on scarves and gloves and Ian and Bronwen were debating whether to share the cheese with everyone or keep it to themselves! The evening was suitably rounded off, of course, with rousing music and a firework display.
