Annual Teddy Bears Picnic
On Sunday 11th September we held our annual teddy bear themed event for the younger residents of Epworth and the Isle. This year we were at a new venue - The Epworth Old Rectory on Rectory Street in the centre of Epworth and it proved to be a great safe and secure location. We started at 2.30pm, after having battled with the windy weather to get the gazebo up and the scene was set for a great afternoon. For the next two hours we had lots of bears arrive escorted by their children, parents and grandparents. In total around 40 guests then proceeded to have much bear themed fun with pass the bear, musical bears, best dressed bear, pin the heart on the bear and much much more. The weather stayed dry, the picnics were eaten and lots of prizes were won. All proceeds went to End Polio Now Rotary charity and we raised £91 whilst having a very fun afternoon in the garden (no woods were available for the bears!).

Cheque handed over for £410 - raised from our Quiz Night in aid on PACT. Received by Max, Olivia & Alex Strong on PACT's behalf.
Party in the Park July 16th
After the downpour suffered last year, everybody was hoping for warm sunny weather for the Party in the Park in Belton this year. But not so unfortunately
This year we occupied a substantial gazebo which was erected early in the morning by Simon Walsh, Marion Cross, Debbie & Ian Cross, Richard Vergette & Richard Fullwood. As we gathered and shared food, wine and friendship, the rain got steadily worse (to look on the bright side it wasn't cold). This was the last of these events as the lady organiser passed away earlier this year. Such a shame that the weather couldn't have been better - but all the same we had a good enjoyable evening.
It was cold and drizzly and the crowd was not as big as it has been in previous (sunnier) years, but the final Concert in the Park went out with a bang and a not insubstantial quantity of quiches in the Rotary tent.
Race for Life in Cleethorpes July 3rd
Tricia :-
A sunny day in Cleethorpes heralded the start of Cancer Research UK Race for Life on Sunday July 3rd 2011
We think twelve from our Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club were there but in amongst 3000 it would have been easy to miss a few so very many thanks to Ray and Tricia, Iain and Vanessa, Ian and Debbie, Marian, Simon, Bronwyn, Andrew, Caroline and Hilary for their support. Some marshalled, some ran, some walked and our President at the time Andrew Gatecliff helped a lady most of the way round so that she could collect her sponsorship. (Arise Sir Andrew Gatecliff - a knight in shining yellow vest and orange T shirt.)
President Andrew also presented Olivia Molitor, the Cancer Research UK organizer for these events, with a cheque for nearly £3000 as part of the proceeds from the Rotary Club Cycle Ride which this year went from Epworth to Holland and back again.
A good cause and a great day.
Bronwen : -
Fed up our our men-folk being the ones to wear shorts and look sporty or fit (or both) when Olivia Molitor from Cancer Research UK asked for our help in marshalling the Cleethorpes Race for Life some of us decided to don our lycra and take part in the event, too. It was a lovely, sunny day, the event was full and there was a terrific atmosphere. Spectators, participants and organisers were friendly and supportive and whilst it was, at times, very emotional to see the messages written on runners’ t-shirts, it was also very uplifting to see so many people of all ages an abilities taking part to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.
Definitely one for the diary next year!!
June 30th 2011 Presidential Handover
An excellent 3 course meal, a few short speeches and some passing on of “jewellery” and President Andrew’s year was over. Well done and thanks to Andrew as he passes custody of the Club to President Simon Cliff. In turn, President Simon welcomes Debbie Cross to her role as President Elect. In his speech, Sergeant at Arms, Richard Fullwood paid tribute to IPP Andrew’s hard work, looked forward to Simon’s plans for the coming year and encouraged us all to be naughty in order to raise money for Foundation and his final comment was to remind us of the wish to put back the Fun in Fundraising.
